When I heard the news that my application got selected for attending a 4 day Google Geo For Good Summit to be held in Bangalore, I was on cloud nine. As a teacher, you get very less opportunities to interact with people working in the field of Air Quality, Conservation, Agriculture etc from NGO's. The theme name itself excited me to apply for it. I was a little skeptical in the beginning because I was not able to understand its significance in education (a typical stereotype teacher thought). But then I realised that its a responsibility as an educator to understand about the dots which are influencing the sustainability of planet Earth and through education try to connect them. So, I made my mind at the last minute to go for it. I am thankful to my school Principal for all support and allowing me to enhance my skills. A Leader makes a difference!
On Day one we were given introductions of each other and were shared with the outlines of the remaining days training and interaction. Google team did all the justice with explaining the idea of the Summit and its proceedings. During all the days learning happened in a non stop manner as we were all the time occupied with one or the other activity. We were trained by the Googlers on
Mapping Tools
- Google Maps
- Google My Maps
- Street View (It was so thrilling to work with Google Card Board)
- Tour Builder
Advanced Mapping Tools
- Google Earth Engine
- Google Time Lapse
- Maps API
- Open Data Kit
Additional Resources
- Google For Education
- Google Earth Outreach (Click here)
- Google Arts and Culture (An amazing resource App is here)
- Google for Non Profits (Google.Org , You tube Impact Lab etc)
- Local Guides
I learnt and enjoyed all 4 days exploring and learning with my group members (Education track). We did a case study on vanishing lakes of Bengaluru as a part of our project.
We used the Google Earth, Earth Engine and Google my map and realised the power and potential of these tools. As educators we developed classroom ideas which we would be taking up in the coming session with our school students and in collaboration.
I express my gratitude to all the members of the Summit for a great enriching learning experience and inspirations.
